Adding character-delineated lists of boxes/folders

Postby lbroaddu » Wed Aug 11, 2010 3:00 pm

It would be really useful to be able to paste in character-(or newline-)delineated lists of container titles and be able to designate that everything in the list should be treated as the title of a new sequential folder, box, etc. That way, when we find an old paper-printed container inventory for a box, we could potentially just scan it, OCR it, do a few edits to insert the appropriate entry-end delineator, and then we could just drop-paste the list into whatever level of our existing Archon finding aid was appropriate.

For the benefit of those interested in this feature...

Actually the current vers. of Archon has a solution for this already-- it just doesn't work on my institution's installation of vers 3.12. We can't get into "Database Management" under Archon Administration without an error message. But for those who want to try the system who can, basically you set up a CSV (Comma Separated Values) file following one of the spreadsheet-type templates that you can look at by going to the home web URL of your institution's Archon page and then adding a forward slash and the word "incoming" and another forward slash, like so:

http:www.myarchonsitename.edu/incoming/

at the end of that url of your site.

You then go ahead and set up an external file following the appropriate template for what you want to import i.e. a collection-level list of folders or what have you (and remember to delete the header line if you are working in Excel before saving as a CSV) and then import that csv file using the Database Management tab under Archon Administration. That is, if you are able to click on it without an error message. It's a tiny bit more ponderous than pasting in a block of character-delineated text within the Archon Collection Content Manager itself, but if we could get at it this way, I'd be quite happy).
