Controlled subject terms for Archon subject fields

We at Oberlin are just beginning to move our finding aids into Archon. My question is about what controlled subject headings people are using in the subject fields, as our finding aids do not have subject terms assigned to them as yet.

Are Archon users generating their own local vocabulary terms, for the most part? Or is there a vocabulary (not LCSH) that people have found useful as a starting point? I checked the U. Illinois site and they are using simple, intuitive terms. We would like to do likewise but wonder if they started from scratch.

Thanks for your suggestions!

At WMU we are using LC subject headings. AAT and TGM for additional genre or material type terms as needed.

Carleton College is using LC when possible and a local list moderated by one of our metadata librarians.

We are using AAT for form/genre.
