Export as CSV?

Postby edw » Fri Nov 30, 2012 3:55 pm

I was just wondering if it is possible to export a finding aid (including collection content) as csv, maybe in the same format as the import sheet? We are doing some data manipulation, and it would be really useful to have it in this format. I have imported the XML to Excel, but it is much too time-consuming to be able to do what I need (for example, details pertinent to an individual item can be dispersed over several rows with no clear way to bring them together).

Many thanks in advance!

I know 3 ways to do what you want, each requires some programming experience to be successful.

One is to export the table contents from your database tables. This needs to be done either through a command line or through a database management tool like PHPMyAdmin. Here are some basic descriptions on how to do exports.

http://www.terminally-incoherent.com/bl ... -csv-file/

Since user defined fields are stored as multiple records in a different table, you or someone that knows MySQL, will need to write up a series of Create View or Join statements in your MySQL code to pull all the different user defined fields into a single CSV sheet.

The second way is to use XSLT to transform the XML sheet into a CSV sheet.

The last way would be to write a new export template in Archon that would add CSV to the list of export options. This would help remove some steps if you have to do this operation many times, but the process of creating a new export template is also not very documented yet in the Archon users manual.

Thanks for the feedback. I will look into these options. I'll post back if I come up with anything useful.
